Capital Project Construction Update: Smith Building Progress

During the summer holidays, renovations to the Smith Building have been going full speed ahead, making solid progress.  Improvements to the Smith Building are part of our Capital Project and an important part of our objective to promote radical hospitality.  The first floor is on an accelerated schedule to be completed by the end of November. Floors two, three, and four are also seeing strong progress and are on track for completion in January 2024. Meanwhile, the Interiors Committee has been hard at work finalizing furniture selections.  In other Capital Project news, the Building Committee is pleased to report that there is much interest among the participating firms in the solicitation process for a General Contractor for the Commons/Fifield Project.  We hope to be able to share an announcement of this new project partner with you in October.

While work continues, we hope you will stop by Founders Hall and view a new display featuring updated floor plans of the Capital Project to indicate where renovations and construction will take place.

The team has worked hard to minimize changes to how we move through and access the campus during construction. However, there are several changes to note:

  • Surface Parking Lot: Please park in the church’s parking deck across the street when you are visiting the campus on a weekday before 5 pm.  Construction and preschool/parents’ morning out will need the limited space available in the surface lot.  Please note, weekday parking after 5 pm in the surface lot should not be an issue.

  • Smith Elevator: Part of the renovations to the Smith Building include updating the current elevator accessed from the Smith Building Lobby. The Smith Building elevator will be out of service for weekday use from August 28 until September 11, 2023. Please note, the elevator will be available for use during the weekends.  During this time, you may access the upper floors by the North Elevator which is parralel to the North Drive. Please visit the Campus Map here for more details or pick up a paper copy of the Campus Map at one of the Security Desks.

To share feedback with your Building Committee or ask us a question, please send an email to: BldgComments@firstpresatl.org or the Connect section of the project website for a list of commonly asked questions and to learn more about this important project or to get in touch.
