North Drive
Detention Vault
At our February Session meeting, a question was raised about the dimensions and capacity of the stormwater detention vault being installed under the north drive. The vault will capture runoff from our roofs and paved areas, and will provide irrigation for the gardens and landscaped areas of the church.
The vault measures 117' x 32' x 6', with a capacity of 22,464 cubic feet, holding approximately 160,000 gallons of water.
Since our February session meeting, New South has finished excavating the hole for the vault, shored the sides, built the formwork, and installed rebar for the bottom.
By Tuesday afternoon, the vault was ready for the concrete floor to be poured.
Wednesday morning, trucks started arriving to the Arts Center Way end of the north drive to deliver concrete. The pour took about 4 hours, and 18 or so truckloads.
The floor of the vault is ready for the next truckload in the floor of the vault.
One truckload delivers enough concrete to fill the area shown in the blue square.
Concrete is pumped into the floor; the boom is directed by remote control (upper right of the photo) and the crew on the ground level and smooth the concrete. The square orange caps on the rebar is a safety feature.
In the coming days, the formwork for the walls will be installed, and another concrete pour will fill that formwork. Once the walls can support it, the formwork for the lid will be built and the final concrete pour will happen. By March 14th, the detention vault is expected to be completed.
